A Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (MA) is a person who helps nurses as well as doctors with a variety of administrative and medical activities. Most medical assistants will work around 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. However, if the medical office remains open for evenings or weekends, additional hours may be required unless there is separate weekend staff.
Because they are trained in both clinical (patient care) and administrative activities, medical assistants are the most versatile of the health-related occupations.
CMAs are qualified to work in most medical offices, so there are many options for employment. Medical assistants are not limited to any particular medical specialty.
Also, becoming a medical assistant is a relatively easy process compared to some other allied roles, so it will be a great way to determine whether you want to become a nurse or a doctor and continue your training further.
What’s Not to Like
Medical assistance is not the most lucrative healthcare profession. Also, there aren’t many career paths; upward mobility is somewhat limited unless you are willing to get more education.
According to the AMA website, the salary range for medical assistants ranges from about $22,000 to over $30,000 per year. Additional benefits such as health insurance may be offered for a salary.
Getting into the medical field can be very difficult and while many people aspire to become professionals, their licensed medical practitioners cannot get into medical school. Medical school is very competitive to get into and tuition is one of the most expensive programs.
One of them or both has become a problem for people who want to become medical practitioners and then they just give up. However, there are other ways to get into medicine without having to go through competition or expensive tuition.
Becoming a medical assistant is a relatively fast path and an excellent option if you are looking to enter the healthcare field. There is little to no competition for admission to higher institutions for this program nor is it half as expensive for professional medical programs. Also, it doesn’t take much time, in just two or three years you will become a professional medical assistant.
